Chicken Island Krabi: A Complete Travel Guide to Koh Kai

Chicken Island Krabi, Koh Kai in Thai, is a small limestone island about 20–25 minutes by longtail from Ao Nang. At one end there's a rock pinnacle that looks exactly like a chicken’s head and neck, hence the name. People come for the shallow-reef snorkeling and for the sandbar that links it, at low tide, to Tup and Mor islands. Almost everyone gets there on the 4 island tour or a private longtail.

What is Chicken Island?

Chicken Island is a steep limestone lump in the Andaman Sea with jungle on top, roughly 600 by 1,000 metres and mostly cliff and forest. The famous bit is a free-standing rock column with a bulging “head” and a jutting “beak”. Get the angle right and the chicken thing is uncanny. Wrong angle? It's a rock. The captains know the angle.

Koh Kai, its Thai name, literally means Chicken Island. Some maps say Koh Poda Nok, “outer Poda”, since it sits just past Poda Island. It's one of the busiest islands in Krabi: every 4 Island Tour stops here, most 7 Island tours do, plenty of Phi Phi combos too.

Location and Accessibility

You'll find Chicken Island off the Krabi coast, south-west of Ao Nang and just south of Poda Island, inside Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. No ferry goes there. Nobody lives there. So you pick one of these:

A few planning tips. Cash for the park fee (usually ฿200 per adult). Your own fins, if you care. And check the tide table the night before, because the sandbar only surfaces near low tide and missing it would sting.

Snorkeling, obviously. The sheltered side has fringing reefs 3–5 metres deep, busy with parrotfish, butterflyfish, sergeant majors and now and then a clownfish tucked in an anemone. The boat anchors right over it and you just jump off the side. Visibility's best December to April. Divers mostly go further out, around Phi Phi, though a few Ao Nang dive shops run easy training dives here.

The Chicken Island Viewpoint is worth a bit of sweat. A short, rough trail climbs from the beach to a lookout over the Tup–Mor sandbar with Poda Island sitting behind it. Shoes, not flip-flops. Ask the guide if there's time; on shared tours there usually isn't, private boats can make it work.

• Walk the sandbar to Tup and Mor at low tide.
• Swim off the small beach under the cliffs.
• Photograph the chicken-head rock from the water — late afternoon light is best.

Chicken Island is one of the Four Islands, with Tup, Mor and Poda. The Four Islands tour strings them together in a day, plus Phra Nang Cave Beach over on the Railay peninsula. They're linked physically too, not just on a map. At low tide a white sandbar called Talay Waek joins Tup and Mor, the shallows reach out towards Chicken Island, and you wade between islets with sea on both sides. A bit magic, honestly.

• Tup Island — two tiny forested islets, the sandbar, and resident macaques.
• Mor Island — the smaller half of the Tup pair; a rocky mound you reach across the sand.
• Poda Island — the biggest of the group, with a long white beach, lunch spots and a sea stack.

Planning Your Visit

Best Time to Visit Chicken Island

The best time to visit Chicken Island is December to March. The Andaman Sea is calm and clear then. November and April? Also good. May to October the southwest monsoon rolls in with swell and rain, and although tours still run most days, visibility drops and some days get scrapped.

Searches for Chicken Island peak in March. So do the crowds on its beach. Dodging them:

• Choose an early bird tour that reaches Chicken Island before 09:30.
• Or go late — sunset tours arrive after most day boats have left.
• Pick a date when low tide falls in the morning, so the sandbar is out early.

A few simple rules you should follow on Chicken Island:

• Wear the life jacket while snorkeling — boats pass close to the reef.
• Wear water shoes on the sandbar; broken coral and shells cut feet.
• Keep food out of sight. The macaques on Chicken and Tup steal bags and can bite.
• Drink plenty of water; there is very little shade on the sandbar.
• Carry cash. There are no ATMs on any of the islands.

Cultural and Environmental Significance

The reefs are what really matter here. Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, set up in 1983, protects them, and your park fee pays for rangers, mooring buoys and beach clean-ups. Bleaching has hammered the coral in hot years. That's why rangers ask you not to stand on coral, feed the fish or pocket shells. Not much to ask.

Culturally these islands belong to Krabi’s fishing communities, many of them Muslim, whose longtails still work the same water. That chicken-head rock was a local landmark long before anyone made it an Instagram prop. Being respectful is easy enough. Reef-safe sunscreen, rubbish back on the boat, monkeys left wild.
