For most people snorkeling's the main thing. The crew hands out the gear (mask, snorkel, life jacket) and parks over the reef off Chicken Island for 30–45 minutes. It's 3–5 metres deep. Fine for beginners.

Phra Nang Cave is the weird one, in a good way. Hanging stalactites, overhangs, blue water lapping right at the mouth, and next to all that natural beauty, the shrine's cheerful clutter of carved offerings. Look, take photos. Don't touch or climb on them.

Railay Beach is basically next door. At Phra Nang you're on the Railay peninsula anyway, so lazing on the sand, swimming under the cliffs and watching climbers inch up the rock walls is all part of the stop.

Best Time to Visit Krabi

December to March is longtail season, really. Flat sea, and that matters far more in a longtail than a speedboat. November and April are good too, just hotter or a little less settled. May to October the southwest monsoon brings swell. Longtails are the first boats to get cancelled, and when they do run it's a rougher ride.

Crowds peak mid-December to February. The off-peak months are cheaper and quieter, and if the weather plays along, a June longtail can be wonderful. I mean it.
